Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
