White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.
While the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
