Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
