The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
