The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
