"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous admirers have also coveted the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly show them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to form a group."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound resilience called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
